NATIONAL WEATHER ADVISORY

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra Nevada through Monday night at midnight.

A Winter Storm Advisory will then be in effect for the Sierra above 5000 feet through Tuesday 4 AM.

Snow levels range from 3500 through 5500 feet.    An additional two inches to one foot of snow accumulation is expected above 4000 feet.

Winds of fifteen to thirty mph will continue, with gusts ranging from forty to sixty mph over the crest of the Sierra.

Cold air will move into the region from Tuesday through Thursday.

In the central valley, temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday morning will range from the upper 20's to 33 degrees.

Another storm system will impact the Sierra from Thursday evening into Friday.

Unsettled weather will continue through the weekend.

A Winter Storm Warning means that significant snow is inevitable and will occur within the issued time frame.

A Winter Storm Advisory is lighter but means that periods of snow will make travel difficult.

UPDATE TO MI WUK MUTUAL WATER ISSUE

2:15 p.m., Sunday:

Some Mi Wuk homeowners had their water flow restored late yesterday (think toilets and being able to flush) but are still under the water boiling guidelines until notified otherwise.

MI WUK MUTUAL WATER DISTRICT OUTAGE

If your home/cabin is serviced by the Mi Wuk Mutual Water District, you have no water.  It went out yesterday (Saturday) after a fire hydrant "blew".  The Fire Department has placed a notice on every home within the MW Water District.  (copied below)

BOIL WATER NOTICE
Failure to follow this advisory could result in stomach of intestinal illness.

Due to the recent water outages, The California Dept. of Public Health, in conjunction with the Tuolumne Country Health Department and Mi Wuk Village Water Company Water System, is advising residents of Mi Wuk Village to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution.

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.  Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one (1) minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water.  Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking and food preparation until further notice.  Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.  This is the preferred method to assure that the water is safe to drink.

We will inform you when tests shows that water is safe to drink and you no longer need to boil your water.  We anticipate resolving the problem within the next five days.

For more information call:
Water Utility contact:  Steve Durgin, Chief Operator, (209) 743-2366
California Dept. of Public Health - Drinking Water Field Operations Branch - Merced District Office: (559) 447-3300.
Local Environmental Health Jurisdiction:  Tuolumne County:  (209) 533-5990

As I get further information, I will post it right here.

By the way, no snow from these recent storms.  Snow level is above 7000'.

(My thanks go out to Nancy Gorham for being my roving reporter and making sure we all had the important information.)

WEATHER IS COMING .............

RAIN is certainly coming our way.  But the flooding and debris runoff that you hear about on the Sacramento news stations, and read on the National Weather Service reports, are for the northern Sierra Nevada:  Butte, Plumas, Shasta, Sacramento counties.  No mention of Tuolumne or Calaveras.  As usual.  Do we really exist?  Sometimes I wonder.   << rather editorial comment!  :)

ALBINO SQUIRREL???

HAVE YOU SEEN what appears to be an albino squirrel in the Kome Rd. area?  Readers Patty and Paul are asking.

If you have seen it, can you snap a photo and send it to me, blythek@mac.com, please.

These photos are not "our squirrel" but they'll certainly give you the idea.

ARE YOU A SKIER?? AT DODGE RIDGE?

A Solid Week of Winter Weather
15 Plus Inches Of Snowfall At The Summit & More To Come...

After 3 days and a series of two storm systems, Dodge Ridge received over 15 inches of new snowfall at the summit above 7,500 feet and about 3 inches at the base area of solid base building wet snow to prepare for the coming weeks.  These initial weekend storms will be followed by a series of storms over the next 2 weeks bringing consistent accumulations of snowfall from base to summit.  If the predicted weather patterns hold true, we'll hopefully be looking at an early December opening here at Dodge Ridge.  Stay tuned . . .

DODGE also has a presence on FaceBook.  Just search for Dodge Ridge and then 'like' them.  You'll get updates sooner than I might get them posted.  You can also go to Twitter to receive Dodge Ridge condition updates by text message or email throughout the season.  Sign up at twitter.com/dodgeridge.

And no, there's no snow in 'this part of Dodge' as of this evening, Sunday, November 18th.  Just intermittent drizzle or perhaps a bit of rain.

WONDERING WHAT IT'S LIKE UP HERE ON HWY 108?

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra Nevada above 6000 feet through Sunday 4pm.

Snow levels will range from 5000 through 7500 feet.

Half a foot to three feet of total snow accumulation is expected above 6000 feet.

Winds of fifteen to forty mph are likely with gusts ranging from fifty to seventy-five mph.

Two to three and a half inches of rain is expected in the Mother Lode.

Unsettled weather will continue next week, with additional storms possible.

No warnings for Highway 108 except that Sonora Pass is closed----find an alternate route. :)

Our driveway is totally covered with pine needles.  And this afternoon is supposed to be windy.  I'll let you know if anything more exciting comes along.

If I don't get back here before Thursday, I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.  We have so much to be thankful for.  Share your thanks with your friends and family during your meal.  This has been a tradition in our family for years and years and now we have the youngest members, 4, 4, 5, and 8 participating.  Priceless.  I'm thankful and grateful for them.

Questions?  Please ask.

Enjoy your day.

YES, WE HAVE SNOW IN MI WUK

Personal:  Russ and I took a well-deserved trip to Maui from 2-9 November which was gifted to us from a girlfriend who was unable to use her time-share this year.  She knew we were in dire need of real R & R (due to our full time care giving roles since January) and 'begged' us to go.  She didn't have to beg for long.

Reality:  We came home to SNOW.  You all know that perhaps but here's the proof:

That's 6" on our deck in Mi Wuk.  Do you have any photos you'd like to share?

Here's one thanks to our neighbor Debbie Laurance (thanks Deb---it's from FB):

We're getting the snow equipment ready for the winter now.  How about you?

From Firefighter Neil Gamez's Mi Wuk FaceBook page, October 12, 2012:

With winter quickly approaching remember to get your chimney flue checked and cleaned. Last night Twain Harte Fire/Rescue responded to their first flue fire (for the year). This should be a good reminder that it is time to get out and start preparing for winter. This week is Fire Prevention week, check your smoke detectors and CO detectors and change the batteries. If you live in the district and need assistance replacing your batteries please call the station, 586-5256.

What do YOU think this winter we present to us???

THE WEATHER----SHE'S A CHANGIN'

Traffic Report for Highway 108:

SONORA PASS IS CLOSED FROM 26.4 MI EAST OF STRAWBERRY (TUOLUMNE CO) TO 5.3 MI WEST OF THE JCT OF US 395 /SONORA PASS/ - DUE TO SNOW - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

Sonora, CA -- Caltrans reports that there will be a couple of significant road closures this week.
The Highway 108 bypass will be closed from Hess Avenue to Standard Road on Monday from 3:30-5:30pm. Crews will be blasting out rocks in the area, so motorists will need to take an alternate route.

And if you're going over to Highway 140:

Coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Highway 140 in Mariposa County will be closed beginning at 11pm. The closure will be from Streetwater Creek to Cedar Lodge. The highway will reopen the following mornings at 5am. Crews will be doing maintenance work on the bridges near the Ferguson Slide area, so you will want to avoid the area during the late night and early morning hours.

I don't have any photos of local weather this past week since we were out of town.  If you do, please send them to blythek@mac.com and I'll share them on the blog.  Give a location if you can.  And if you have any photos or ideas you'd like to share, send them my way.  I'll get them up here for others to enjoy as well.

THINGS **NOT** TO DO ON OLD PRIEST GRADE

A friend in Sonora brought this YouTube video to our attention yesterday.  I would not recommend trying this:

http://contour.com/stories/sierra-nevada-dh-skate

Click on the link above or copy and paste it into your browser.  It seems I cannot embed a video into a Blogger post.   When you use a free blogging service sometimes you get exactly what you pay for!  Sadly.  But, check out the video.  It's crazy, stupid, dangerous and was filmed right in our 'backyard'!

Let me know your thoughts!  :)

BLAST OFF !

Sonora, CA -

Caltrans is shutting down highway 108 from Hess Avenue to Cavalieri Road for blasting on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, from 3p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

They say motorists could see 10 minute delays on the bypass so you may want to go a different route like Mono Way.

Click here to view a map of the closed off streets during the blasting.

This work is part of the $52.9 million SR-108 East Sonora Bypass Stage II Project which began on April 19, 2012. The project will construct a two lane expressway on a new alignment from Peaceful Oak Road to Via Este Road. The project will be built as a continuation of the East Sonora Bypass Stage I, which was completed in 2002. Caltrans says the project will ease congestion, improve mobility, decrease travel times, improve operations, and enhance safety for both commute and recreational traffic in Tuolumne County.

HEAT WAVE BEGINNING TODAY----PLEASE USE CAUTION

This article (source: MyMotherlode.com) refers to Calaveras County but I can't image that we here in the greater Sonora area will not be affected.  Be alert!

Calaveras County, CA -- Calaveras County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to take precautions as we'll see steamy temps through next Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement. They say the Mother Lode will see temps in the triple digits for the daytime.

Calaveras County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services is highlighting the impending heat period for public awareness because we have been fortunate to have had relatively mild summer temperatures for the past two years. They say they're concerned some residents may not be as conscientious about heat safety as they were previously.

They say the warning is targeted at those who work in prolonged heat in outdoor occupations, children in their last week of summer break staying out in the heat, and to agricultural animals. They also caution the elderly, pets, and those without air conditioners.

Those who use fans instead of air conditioners will need to drink extra portions of water as fans will dehydrate a person faster than air conditioners.

Here are some tips to beat the heat:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
3. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
4. Wear light weight and light colored clothing.

From the National Weather Service:
CURRENT PROJECTIONS INDICATE THE HOTTEST DAYS WILL BE
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WHEN HIGHS IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY ARE
EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 105 TO 110 WITH TEMPERATURES IN
THE MOUNTAINS IN THE 80S AND 90S. OVERNIGHT MINIMUM TEMPERATURES
WILL ALSO BE WARM WITH VALLEY READINGS IN THE MID 60S TO LOWER
70S WITH MAINLY 50S AND 60S IN THE MOUNTAINS. WARMER FOOTHILL
LOCALES MAY SEE SEVERAL DAYS WITH OVERNIGHT MINIMUMS ONLY IN
THE 70S.

**********

Please use precautions when you visit your cabin or just in your daily tasks this coming weekend.

FIRE STILL BURNING IN SOULSBYVILLE

Tuesday, 9.55 p.m.
Soulsbyville, CA --

CAL Fire says the fire has grown to 40 acres and is 20 percent contained and 16 engines are on the scene.  They say crews will continue to battle the blaze overnight.

The flames started at Armario Road and Elliot Road off of Soulsbyville Road. CAL Fire says two residential structures, one an A-frame and a stick frame, as well as one out building, one pick-up and one travel trailer were all damaged in the fire.

Tuolumne County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Wilson says there were no evacuations. However, CAL Fire says those people who left their homes vouluntarily when the fire first broke out will not be allowed back into the area. They say an evacuation center has been set up at the Soulsbyville Club House off of Willow Springs Road.

CAL Fire says power lines are down and nearly 1300 people are without power. PG & E is on the scene trying to fix the lines and restore power.

CAL Fire reports Soulsbyville Road is closed between Black Oak and Willow Springs Road. No word on what sparked the blaze, CAL Fire says they are still investigating.

Cooperating Agencies: Tuolumne County SO, Red Cross, Tuolumne County FD, Tuolumne City Fire District, CDCR, CHP, PG&E, Tuolumne Utility District

DIRECT USA FOODS! DON'T BUY FROM THEM IF THEY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR!

Warning to readers in the Sonora, Mi Wuk Village, Sugar Pine, Twain Harte expanded area:  LOUSY MEAT!!!!  DIRECT USA FOODS SELLS FROZEN BAD FOOD--QUICK TO CASH YOUR CHECK--BUT DON'T EXPECT YOUR MONEY BACK, AND GOOD LUCK TO GET A CALL BACK.

~~~~~~
Russ and I were SUCKERS for this truck as it pulled up in our driveway, several months ago unfortunately.    Read this article (link below) from 2007!  It's still exactly the same.  They still exist and do business.  Complaints are from all around the country.  What this man (a food inspector) said is exactly what we experienced
Don't worry friends and family:  we will NOT serve you any of this meat.  I just want as many people as possible to avoid these low-life idiots.  How do I really feel??????  We've taken out 2 "T-Bone Steaks" for tonight's dinner and just thought we'd check out their website which they had the audacity to place on the box.  There's a pretty long line of people who have the same experience that we've had:  absolutely LOUSY MEAT!
Here's the complaint link:
http://www.ripoffreport.com/door-to-door-sales-people/direct-usa-foods/direct-usa-foods-sells-frozen-9s8cd.htm
Today's comments are from two very disgusted--with ourselves and this scum company--Mi Wuk Village residents.  Did anyone else fall for these jerks?  It's OK, you can admit it.  I am!!!  If our life style wasn't come/go while we are caregivers for Russ's son (ALS) we probably wouldn't have succumbed.  At least I hope we wouldn't have.  What were they doing on our little Mi Wuk roads?  Looking for "elderly" suckers?  Vacationer suckers at their cabins?  Make your backbone strong if these pushy people ever come to your door.  They're good.  In a bad way.
BEAUTIFY MI WUK CORRIDOR
On June 11, 2012 a large group of residents and local merchants met to discuss ways of cleaning up the Highway 108 corridor in Mi Wuk Village.  For quite some time there has been an area of blight along the corridor that is being cleaned up with the help of several agencies and volunteers.  In the spirit of community activism, the Beautify Mi Wuk Corridor (BMWC) campaign was initiated with the intent of making Mi Wuk Village “The Cutest Village in the Sierra”.  Listed below are some of the ideas that were proposed at the meeting.
Short term goals
  • Clean up Highway 108 corridor
  • Improve Mi Wuk Village signage
  • Paint boarded up fronts of two vacant housing units where the County posted abatement notice
  • Install donation jars for BMWC at various locations in Mi Wuk Village
  • Contact California Highway Patrol regarding speeding issues
  • Investigate Federal and State grants
Long term goals
  • Install water to triangle area at Highway 108 and Pela Road Cutoff
  • Plant poppies and lupines along the corridor
  • Landscape triangle with seasonal flower
  • Install flower boxes and barrels in front of businesses
  • Install banners along the corridor
The following committees were formed:  Landscaping,  Clean up and maintenance,  Code Enforcement and Fundraising.
BMWC is researching different options for its group.  We have contacted the Mi Wuk Area Homeowners Association about the possibility of coming under its umbrella as a sub committee, and are also looking at proceeding as a separate entity.  We are still in the early stages of this new club and a decision will be made at a later date.
As part of BMWC, local merchants are working together to fund a new Mi Wuk Village sign for the triangle area.  We have contacted the water department to see about the possibility of installing a water line to this area.
It will take time and money to accomplish the BMWC goals.  If you are interested in donating your time or have wood to donate for the planter boxes, please contact me at the number or e-mail listed at the bottom of this article.
We have installed donation jars at several local businesses.  Or, if you wish to donate via check, please make them payable to Jody Villa or Marge Bowen, PO Box 426, Mi Wuk Village, CA  95346.  Every little bit will help to accomplish our goals to make Mi Wuk Village the “Cutest Village in the Sierra”.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.  I look forward to hearing from you.
THANKS FOR SUPPORTING *OUR* MI WUK / SUGAR PINE FIRE DEPARTMENT
What a beautiful day we had today for the annual PANCAKE BREAKFAST.  It's always held as close as possible to the 4th of July.
It's a lot of fun working with a great committee of Fire Auxiliary members to put this breakfast together.  And it's also so much fun to see our neighbors, full and part timers.  Here's a bit of the story in pictures:
 Clowns in the kitchen:  Russ Klipple and Arlen Richardson.
 Nancy Dumas, Dale Armstrong and Maury Leal prepare the pancake mix for these guys below:
 L > R: Austin (intern), Duty Officer Neil Gamez, Michael Garza (intern), Shauta Murray (intern), and Duty Officer Paul Brandow.  They were great pancake turners, coming up with spiral, banana and mickey mouse pancakes.
 Greeters:  Eleanor Sloper, Ida Stewart and Dolores Moneski.
 Manning the table showing logo shirts, cards-for-grownups at the Mi Wuk Library, Mi Wuk coffee mugs, and Auxiliary membership forms is Patty Noe.
Laurie Kirk and her visiting sister, Nancy-from-Hesperia, dole out pancakes.........
.......that have been prepared by our fire fighters.  This is Michael.
 Toni Richardson, Bessie, and Clarene Schupp guard the scrambled eggs and sausages.
 Bea, Karen Schultz, Eileen Hill and Nonie Ohlsen are in charge of beverages.
 Ellen Heald, auxiliary president, Alvena Leal and Alice Smith take a break from cooking eggs.
 Hmmmmm, let's see:  Mike Welch, Russ Klipple and Tim Wallace were......guarding the place!  Actually they were all around helpers, primarily sausage but anything else that needed doing was in their purview.
 I love photos taken from behind the subjects--here, the serving line.
 And here, the pancake turning.
 Pat Bremicker:  coffee anyone???
 Still pouring out the pancake batter, Dale, Maury and Linda.
 Fire Fighter Neil Gamez, his wife Valerie and little guy, Chad.
THE COMMITTEE:
L > R: Alice Smith, Blythe Klipple and Linda Clark
What was extra fun about today, for me anyway, was that I got to meet Bert and Don Smith, Mi Wuk part-timers from Cupertino who are readers of our blog.  Now they know that "Blythe Klipple" really does exist.
And I got to share hugs with Cindy and David Zbin whom I've met several times (thanks for coming out!!!)---and meeting them was also through this blog.  Thanks so much for coming over and saying HI.
THANK YOU COMMUNITY, FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, AUXILIARY MEMBERS, FIRE FIGHTERS and MY HUSBAND, RUSS, who gets rail-roaded into all the events--and loves it!
