SPAGHETTI DINNER WAS A GREAT SUCCESS

I want to send a big

SHOUT OUT and THANK YOU

to all who attended the Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District Auxiliary Spaghetti Dinner fund raiser.

The food was delicious, many folks did take-out which sure beats cooking, and the Word of Life Fellowship brought several dozen yummy cupcakes that were enjoyed by those who happened to be present at that time.

For those on the committee:  we all know it was a lot of hard work but the fun and pleasure at seeing the gathering of community always cancels out the hours of effort put in to making the event a success.

Chief Larry Crabtree and his wife, Sue, enjoyed early seating along with the firefighters who were on duty.

Do you thing the guys were enjoying their dinners?

One of the committee responsibilities is 'stirring the pots' every ten minutes so the sauce doesn't burn on the bottom.  Very important position!  And we never have burnt sauce.

Put the Saturday of Labor Day weekend 2015 on your calendars for next year!

September 5th!  4-7 p.m.

RIM FIRE SUSPECT INDICTED

Tuolumne County, CA — A federal indictment alleges that a Columbia resident kindled a fire in the Stanislaus National Forest, and allowed it to spread beyond his control.

At the time of the fire on August 17th, fire restrictions were in place in the Stanislaus National Forest. Keith Emerald, 32, was rescued by helicopter from the Clavey River Canyon, approximately an hour after the fire started.

U.S. Attorney’s Office Spokesperson Lauren Horwood would not comment on why the investigation took nearly a year, other than to say it was “extensive.”

Court documents claim that Emerald initially admitted to causing the fire, but then later denied it.

The affidavit notes that investigators first sat down and interviewed Emerald, at length, on August 23, 2013. The report notes that Emerald initially said he believed a rockslide started the fire.
In a later interview on August 30, investigators spoke with Emerald near the site of the fire’s origin. Emerald said on the day the fire started he had been dressed in camouflage and believed that marijuana growers spotted him, and they may have thought he was law enforcement. Emerald indicated to investigators that he thought marijuana growers could have started the fire.

Court documents show on September 3rd, during an interview, Emerald allegedly admitted to accidentally starting the fire while cooking soup. Winds blew embers uphill, and he was not able to control it. Emerald was concerned about his name getting out in the media. Officials said that it would not be released until a later date, around winter.

In a follow up discussion days later, Emerald allegedly stated he only admitted to starting the fire because of pressure placed on him by investigators.

The ongoing investigation continued over the course of the next year. A search warrant was carried out at his vehicle and residence, and evidence was analyzed. This morning federal officials stated they have probable cause to believe that Emerald was responsible.

He is expected to appear soon in federal court in Fresno.

It is noted that Emerald is innocent until proven guilty.

FLOOD WARNING DUE TO DAM (in Twain Harte)

12.06 P.M. 8/3/14   BJ Hanson

Twain Harte, CA — Due to cracks observed at the Twain Harte Dam, there is a flash flood warning for parts of Tuolumne County.

The National Weather Service reports at 10:45am the operator of the Twain Harte Dam reported seeing cracks, and heard a large boom, signaling a potential dam failure. There is concern that water could come out and go towards Sullivan Creek and portions of Belleview. There is a flash flood warning for those areas.

If in those areas,  you are advised to not cross any water covered bridges, or low water crossings.

The reservoir is just downstream from the community of Twain Harte, which is not expected to be impacted.

Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Sgt. Scott Johnson reports there are no evacuation advisories in place as a result of the flash flood warning.

IT'S BEEN AWHILE

I'm sorry I haven't posted here for at least a month but..........
1- it's been a wild month and
2- Google, owner of this blogspot blog decided to make some huge changes which included changing all of MY sign in information.  What the heck??????  It has taken me some time to rearrange and reconstruct MY sign in info.

What I was unable to post was information about the Chili Cook Off and Craft Fair which happened at the Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Station yesterday!   I tried!

A new fire apparatus (to us) drove into the parking area around 11 a.m.  It was purchased from the Ashland, Oregon department and will fulfill some gaps in what our station has been able to do.  It also has a smaller turning space and can go up some streets that our current engines/apparatus can not.  It was purchased at a great price and one of the current older model engines has been retired.

Inside the apparatus bays, 6 cooks worked on their own chili concoctions.  When I get the official information I'll let you know the winners' names.  In the meantime, here's my sweetie's station:

And out in the parking area were the craft booths.  I only have a photo of mine so that's what I'll share.  It was 94 degrees in Sugar Pine which might explain my lack of other photos.  If you don't know it, I have taught rubber stamp art for the past 18 years as a demonstrator for Stampin' Up!, a now international manufacturer of many things rubber and related.

My decision for yesterday's booth was to show the variety of things that can be created with artistic rubber stamps and related supplies.  The variety is from A-Z, finished hand-stamped cards to Project Life Memory Keeping to 3-D decorative items.  And much much more.  You can find out more about how I spend my 'spare time' here.

Coming in September:  a new blog location and much shorter url/blog address.  Stay tuned.  I'll be able to have links to local establishments in the sidebar and more.  I'm excited!

IT IS SO GOOD TO SEE SO MANY NEIGHORS & RESIDENTS "TAKING UP THE RAKE"

It's fabulous to see so many Mi Wuk residents taking seriously the Cal Fire requirement of creating defensible space on their property.

With record low rainfall, the grass and brush across California is tinder dry and ready to burn. CAL FIRE officials are reminding residents to ensure they are maintaining 100 feet of Defensible Space, a reminder that comes several months earlier than normal.

Here are some tips for creating Defensible Space
  • Maintain 100 feet of defensible space around all structures
  • Clear all needles and leaves from roofs, eaves and rain gutters.
  • Trim branches six feet from the ground.
  • Landscape with fire resistant / drought tolerant plants, that require little water
  • Remove branches away from roofs and 10 feet from the chimney
  • Use trimming, mowing and powered equipment before 10 a.m and not on hot, windy days.
  • Keep wood piles and flammable materials at least 30 feet from the home

My big mouth and desire to see my community as safe as possible lured me into volunteering to work with Cal Fire in getting these inspections underway this year.  There are 8-10 community volunteers who are going out, with designated Mi Wuk maps, along with Cal Fire crews, 1-2 times per week until we have covered the entire village.

Notices of 'non-compliance' will be sent to each homeowner who has 'earned' one, highlighting what still needs to be addressed.

If you have questions, there are informational forms and flyers at the Mi Wuk / Sugar Pine Station on Hwy 108.  If you need to discuss your concerns with your property, please call the Twain Harte Cal Fire station at 586-3362.

Mi Wuk's volunteer program, Volunteers in Prevention, is following the very successful model established by the Murphys area over the past four years.  Let's show them that we can do it too!

Burn permit have been suspended.

Thank you all for loving our community and doing what you can to see that it remains as fire safe as possible.

We don't want to see this.

We want to see wildflowers like those in my signature below:

FIRST ANNUAL ROYAL FLUSH CRAPPER DERBY in TWAIN HARTE, JUNE 7th

The First Annual Royal Flush Crapper Derby took place in Epproson Park in Twain Harte yesterday, June 7th.  There WILL be a Second Annual and when it's announced, you ought to put it on your calendar!  It was great fun.

Each 'crapper' was moved down a prescribed route by two runners.  No motors allowed.  There was a series of two crapper heats, narrowing down the field to one final winner, Rolling Thunder.  The winner will represent Twain Harte in the October finals in Virginia City NV.

See what you missed?  Maybe next year.  There was also a Craft Fair associated with the event.
Rumor has it that the powers-that-be in Virginia City outlawed outhouses within the city limits.  Date unknown.  Those who had outhouses, in protest, placed them on wagons and pulled them all to the front of City Hall.  Then......there being a hill, they raced them on down said hill to a saloon where a great party was had by all.
I've tried to substantiate this rumor but have found nothing via Google search.  If you know more, please email me at blythek@mac.com.  Thanks.  A good story is a good story!!!

I have a short (28 seconds) video of one of the heats on my FaceBook page.

Have a great day.

FIRE SAFE PROPERTY INSPECTIONS HAVE BEGUN IN MI WUK VILLAGE

Property inspections began this morning, Friday, May 30th, in Mi Wuk.

Cal Fire crews, as well as a few community volunteers coordinated through the Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District, began to inspect properties on the northwest perimeter of Mi Wuk, adjacent the fuel breaks and debris piles created during the Rim Fire last year.  Those piles will most likely be burned during rainy or snowy weather for the safety of all.  Crews will be forming clearance rings around the debris before burning commences.

Inspections will continue throughout the community during the next month.  Please do what you can to make Mi Wuk firesafe.  It benefits us all.

What are the inspectors looking for?
  • EVIDENCE that cleanup is in progress in earnest
  • DEAD OR DYING VEGETATION must be completely removed unless otherwise specified
    • needles, leaves or other vegetation on roofs, gutter, decks, porches or stairways
    • limbs or trees adjacent or overhanging buildings
    • leaves, needles and grass within 30 feet of all structures, including decks, stairways, etc.
    • trees, brush, branches and limbs 15 feet from the ground and 100 feet from all structures
    • Logs or stumps embedded in the soil:  remove or isolate from structures and other vegetation
    • Grass beyond 30 feet from structures: mow to max 4 inches in height, may stay on the ground
  • LIVE VEGETATION to be thinned or pruned:
    • Mountain misery/bear clover within 30 feet of all structures: remove completely
    • Mountain misery/bear clover between 30 and 100 feet of structures; prune overhanging trees to 15 feet
    • Brush, shrubs, grounds-covers, seedling/sapling trees:  thin, prune, and space
    • Mature trees:  prune up at least 6 feet, more on slopes
  •  OTHER:
    • Stove pipes, chimney outlets:  remove limbs and trees within 10 feet
    • Stove pipes, chimney outlets:  cover with 1/2" mesh screen
    • propane tanks:  clear 10 feet around and 15 feet above
    • woodpiles:  clear 10 feet around and 15 feet above
    • non-vegetative flammable material:  remove or clear around and cover with fire resistant material
When you see either Cal Fire or the volunteer inspectors in your neighborhood, feel free to ask them questions about the clearing requirements.

Be sure to ask if you have special needs.

There are several brochures and documents about being fire safe at our Mi Wuk Sugar Pine station,
Fire Station 77 on Highway 108 as well as a list of service providers.

Remember, these inspections are a step towards our safety as individuals and as a community.  They are not any sort of a punishment!
