BRIEFING NOTES, AUGUST 22, 2013

Rim Fire information was shared by Chief Larry Crabtree and one of our Tuolumne County Sheriffs whose name I didn't catch.  (Anyone:  please let me know and I'll name him more properly.)

What follows are my 'raw' notes, taken as they were spoken.

Rim Fire has grown to 54000 acres.   Mainly in Groveland area.   It has crossed the  Clavey and Tuolumne rivers and is on both sides of Hwy. 120.

It is approximately 7 miles, as crow flies, from Tuloumne City.  It will take 2-3 days to travel that far.  No evacuations currently as of 11 a.m. along 108 corredor.  75 fire engines are ordered for Tuoumne City and environs.  If it hits, that’s where it would hit first.  Then work its way up.

8-10 air miles to get to Mi Wuk, Suger Pine, Sierra Village.

Sheriff’s department putting together a plan for Tuolumne

IF we have to evacuate, WHAT would you take with you.  To check out what you would take:
RED CROSS website or State Office of Emergency Services website.

Let the fire station know the name, address, phone of neighbors who would be needing assistance, e.g. elderly, physically impaired, etc.    586-5256

Type 2 team will be leaving duty today, turning leadership over to Team 1 tomorrow or Saturday.  Currently they are  planning and resource gathering.

Don't be frightened if you see fire rigs going up and down the road.  It means resources are here and they are checking out the community.  Good sign!

UNRELIABLE SOURCES:  FB and TWITTER!

NO EVACUATION imminent in our area.  The Sheriff's Office has requested mutual aid.  Stanislaus Sheriff dept. is on site now and you will see 5 2-man units on 108 corredor already.  Normal is 2 units.

Power has been cut to most of Pine Mountain Lake.

Semantics of evacuation:

1- warning-- get your meds/papers together.  Box them up, ready to go
2- advisory - may get call on home phone via reverse 911--evacuation advisory.  Will try to go door to door as well.  TIME TO GO!  If you don’t want to evacuate, that’s up to you.
3- ORDER:  physically removing people from their property.  aka mandatory evac.  Chief Crabtree has never seen an evacuation order in his 35 + year career.

Where to go:  Motherlode Fairgrounds.  Can hold 1000 people.
open to pets including horses and cows.
RVs will pay fee (half price) because they really are self-sustaining.
Tent trailers OK - not self-sustaining

Think about HOW you’re going to get out of your neighborhood!
    What you’re going to take
what car you’re going to take
what stuff you’re going to take

Get livestock gathered and moved ahead of time.

Full tank of gas

Cell towers are protected from fire by clearing around tower.   Land lines ONLY for reverse 911 alerts.  So if you don't have a land line, you will not receive a reverse 911 alert call.

Where are cell towers?  Unknown for sure.  Will find out.

Local emergency declared already.  Request in to govt to declare county emergency.  PAYS for resources.  Does not provide resources.  Rim Fire is top priority fire in the western area.  :(

No hotel rooms available!  will need to house outside county.

Strawberry Music festival has been canceled.

Other fires in state are winding down and those resources are being diverted here.

Plan of attack  is updated and revised every 12 hours.

How many personnel on fire:  1500.

Team 1:  national guard.  Yesterday: 15 aircraft.  Today: ??

Containment: forward progress has been stopped
Control:  contained and chances of escaping containment are slim.

A PLUG from Chief Crabtree:  need volunteer firefighters!
    need: community inspectors:  CALFIRE:  VIP
More info in community inspectors to follow.

There will be a briefing daily until no longer needed.  Tomorrow's briefing:  Word of Life Fellowship, 2 p.m.
