RIM FIRE: FLASH FLOOD WATCH, Sept 1st, 10:50 a.m.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the Sierra Nevada mountains from Yosemite National Park to the Tulare County Mountains until 10 pm this evening.

MyMotherlode.com file photo from February 2010 when the Merced River was running full and fast.

A very moist and unstable airmass is over the region. Scattered thunderstorm development is expected and movement of any storm will be rather slow. Due to this slow movement, heavy rainfall is likely with the possibility of flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Additionally, the San Joaquin Valley, Mariposa County and Tuolumne County Air Pollution Control Districts have issued an Air Quality Alert due to smoke impacts from the Rim Fire in Tuolumne, Mariposa, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and the valley portion of Kern Counties.

This Air Quality Alert is in effect until 12 pm Monday (Labor Day) September 2nd.
Exposure to particle pollution can cause serious health problems, aggravate lung disease, cause asthma attacks and acute bronchitis and increase risk of respiratory infections.

Residents are advised to use caution as conditions warrant. People with heart or lung diseases should follow their doctors advice for dealing with episodes of unhealthy air quality.

Older adults and children should avoid prolonged exposure, strenuous activities or heavy exertion as conditions dictate.
