IT IS SO GOOD TO SEE SO MANY NEIGHORS & RESIDENTS "TAKING UP THE RAKE"

It's fabulous to see so many Mi Wuk residents taking seriously the Cal Fire requirement of creating defensible space on their property.

With record low rainfall, the grass and brush across California is tinder dry and ready to burn. CAL FIRE officials are reminding residents to ensure they are maintaining 100 feet of Defensible Space, a reminder that comes several months earlier than normal.

Here are some tips for creating Defensible Space
  • Maintain 100 feet of defensible space around all structures
  • Clear all needles and leaves from roofs, eaves and rain gutters.
  • Trim branches six feet from the ground.
  • Landscape with fire resistant / drought tolerant plants, that require little water
  • Remove branches away from roofs and 10 feet from the chimney
  • Use trimming, mowing and powered equipment before 10 a.m and not on hot, windy days.
  • Keep wood piles and flammable materials at least 30 feet from the home

My big mouth and desire to see my community as safe as possible lured me into volunteering to work with Cal Fire in getting these inspections underway this year.  There are 8-10 community volunteers who are going out, with designated Mi Wuk maps, along with Cal Fire crews, 1-2 times per week until we have covered the entire village.

Notices of 'non-compliance' will be sent to each homeowner who has 'earned' one, highlighting what still needs to be addressed.

If you have questions, there are informational forms and flyers at the Mi Wuk / Sugar Pine Station on Hwy 108.  If you need to discuss your concerns with your property, please call the Twain Harte Cal Fire station at 586-3362.

Mi Wuk's volunteer program, Volunteers in Prevention, is following the very successful model established by the Murphys area over the past four years.  Let's show them that we can do it too!

Burn permit have been suspended.

Thank you all for loving our community and doing what you can to see that it remains as fire safe as possible.

We don't want to see this.

We want to see wildflowers like those in my signature below:
